Burton Machen

Photo news: burton Machen
Burton Machen is an accomplished photographer and artist who always
displayed a fondness for detail and aesthetics. Machen has spent 20 years
honing his eye for detail in the beauty and fashion world and has benefited
from media attention in Vogue, Harpers Bazaar, W, Entertainment Weekly and
more recently Angeleno Interiors. Originally from Ashville, Alabama, Burton
has lived in New York, Washington DC, New Orleans, Atlanta and Rio de
Janeiro and now makes Los Angeles his home.
Machen believes that “We often fail to really notice what we see” and that
“Everything is not always as it first appears”. As a child, he would notice subtle
variations in texture and color and was always fascinated by the movement of
clouds or trees in the wind. This fascination has now blossomed into an artistic
outlet where Burton can express and share; revealing a side to his creativity
that until about 5 years ago recently was kept to himself: his photography.
In his photographs of nature, Machen looks at the space between movement
and stagnant to capture the flow that we often overlook. With the “Urban
Evolution” series his work has been described as quiet and ghostly – a
collection that marks the passage of time through the collage-like effect that
occurs when artists and elements work together in urban settings. The artist
thoughtfully observes it is a reflection on “…the effect we have on the world.”
