If you are searching for a door with a difference, look no further than these incredible modern doors by Karim Rashid from Albed.

Karim Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of his generation. Over 3000 designs in production, over 300 awards and working in over 35 countries attest to Karim’s legend of design.

« Today poetic design is based on a plethora of complex criteria: human experience, social behaviors, global, economic and political issues, physical and mental interaction, form, vision, and a rigorous understanding and desire for contemporary culture. Manufacturing is based on another collective group of criteria: capital investment, market share, production ease, dissemination, growth, distribution, maintenance, service, performance, quality, ecological issues and sustainability. The combination of these factors shape our objects, inform our forms, our physical space, visual culture and our contemporary human experience. These quantitative constructs shape business, identity, brand and value. This is the business of beauty. Every business should be completely concerned with beauty – it is after all a collective human need. »

« I believe that we could be living in an entirely different world – one that is full of real contemporary inspiring objects, spaces, places, worlds, spirits and experiences. Design has been the cultural shaper of our world from the start. We have designed systems, cities, and commodities. We have addressed the world’s problems. Now design is not about solving problems, but about a rigorous beautification of our built environments. Design is about the betterment of our lives poetically, aesthetically, experientially, sensorially, and emotionally. My real desire is to see people live in the modus of our time, to participate in the contemporary world, and to release themselves from nostalgia, antiquated traditions, old rituals, kitsch and the meaningless. We should be conscious and attune with this world in this moment. If human nature is to live in the past – to change the world is to change human nature. »

James Nizam is a visual artist living in Vancouver.

He completed a B.F.A. at the University of British Columbia in 2002. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally; selected exhibitions include the Surrey Art Gallery, the Or Gallery, Gallery Jones, Gallery 44 (Toronto), Scalo Guye Gallery (Los Angeles), and Toronto Image Works. His work has been reviewed and published in Flash Forward, Border Crossings Magazine, Canadian Art Magazine, Vancouver Review, The Vancouver Sun, The Toronto Star, The Globe & Mail, and The Georgia Straight. His work is in several private collections and was acquired by the Bank of Montreal Collection.

James Nizam built a series of sculptural assemblages using building materials and furniture. In each piece, a single type of object is arranged into a pile, cluster, tower or entanglement. This surprising work appears familiar to anyone who has been on a building site, but also appears somewhat constructed because of its sculptural nature.

Alvaro Sanchez-Montañes, a Barcelona based photographer, decided to explore the abandoned homes and ghost towns of the Namib desert after reading about the deserted diamond mines in Namibia. In this series, Desert Indoors, Alvaro documents inside these empty homes time etching itself into the paint-chipped walls, and observes the desert conquering over any bit of memory or clue of human habitation.

Alvaro Sanchez-Montanes found “the beauty in the abandoned, of the useless, of the time passing by.” The photographs he took to document the occurrence are surreal.

The Light Form is an innovative lighting concept created by Francesca Rogers and Daniele Gualeni Design Studio that allows users to manipulate the object to customize light as their desire. The concept is actually a huge modular surface fitted with lights in different points that can be unveiled through moving the double-color wood surfaces. The dark side of wenge wood is designed so that it can be folded out to open the other side of white European maple, making the surface of the light bigger. This white surface increases the illumination of the electroluminescent film made lights. This concept gives a user the freedom of increasing or decreasing the density of light whichever is most suitable and soothing for him or her.

Paul de Nooijer was born in Eindhoven, Netherlands in 1943. From 1960 to 1965 he attended Akademie voor Industrile Vormgeving in that same town, a city which would also later host one of his first solo exhibitions (at the Van Abbemuseum in 1977). His films have earned honors around the world, including first prize at the AnimExpo, Seoul, Korea; the 5th International Animation Film Festival, Hiroshima, Japan; and the Long Island Film Festival, New York. His work is represented in the collections of such institutions as Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Modern Art, Yokohama, Japan; and the California Arts Institute, Valencia. He is currently involved primarily in film and performance, and has long worked in collaboration with his son, Menno de Nooijer.

The urge to manipulate the visible world, to wrest everyday reality from its context and present it in a different guise or from a different angle is a leitmotif that runs throughout his entire oeuvre. He has consistently explored the visual potential of the photographic medium in relation to film, theatre, architecture, painting and sculpture. His eclectic approach, absurdist humour and parody of conventional perception anticipated and inspired Dutch staged photography of the 1980s.

Olivier Valsecchi’s most recent work, “Dust,” features men and women seemingly caught in a womb-like dust storm — an alternate universe devoid of gravity and color.

“The Dust series is an in-between,” explains the artist. “Between death and birth, in a chronological sense. It is the ‘re’. It is the chaos, the confusion between the water and the gloom that is the cradle of the world. Between the fall and the takeoff, the renunciation and the impulse, the bodies are chalky, zombie-like, between animated and disembodied. The in-between, meaning what is nearly, what is not quite.”

A shadow cloud is a three-dimensional object, consisting of multiple shadow-casting elements semi-randomly arranged in three dimensions in such a way, that depending on the direction of illumination the overall shadow of the cloud displays various images encoded in it. A shadow cloud can be viewed as a generalization of shadow casting panels, but of course the basic idea of multiple shadows from one three-dimensional structure is already present in well-known GEB-triples. However, in contrast to GEB-triplets, a shadow cloud can encode up to four arbitrary images and display them under appropriate illumination without any distortions.

The idea of shadow clouds can be summarized as follows: the shadow cast by flat, thin elements depends on their relation to the direction of illumination: elements perpendicular to illumination cast clear shadows, while the shadows of elements parallel to illumination are practically invisible. Moreover, the elements perpendicular to the illumination can be arbitrary shifted along the illumination without changing the overall shadow cast by all the elements. This allows for a random, cloud-like placement of elements in space.

MagicBeans is a playful and ironic element which will brighten up any room in the house; despite its unusual shape it is an effective hanger and the attachment points are adjustable both in number and in height.
This project takes inspiration from a tale: Jack and the beanstalk.
Jack is represented by the white puppets and the bean plant is the green rope.

The height of the hanging points can be easily changed if the user slide the puppet on the rope gently. This system is similar to the famous Flos light Parentesi.

MagicBeans will be soon put on market and you will find it in the best design shops.

Léon Ferrari was born in Buenos Aires in l920.

He is autodidact in arts. Due to family matters, he travelled to Italy in l952 and started working in art in Rome in l955. That year he made his first one man exhibition in Milan and he came back to Argentina. He made sculptures with different types of materials: ceramics, plaster, cement, wood and finally with stainless steel wires.

“León Ferrari’s vibrant and challenging work is conversant with poetry, explores enigmas and metaphors, comments on space and form, creates music, can depict improbable cities and impugn religious and military institutions that monopolize ‘the revealed truth.’

“Today, his ink drawings, collages, sculptures, heliographies, Braille-embossed photographs, objects and installations are all critically acclaimed and in worldwide demand. Ferrari at 87 is active, sharp, working daily and enjoying a fertile creative period as well as experiencing great personal success.”
